SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Living music legend George Clinton is the latest addition to an all-star roster of talent scheduled to speak or perform at the third annual One Nation Hip-Hop Summit, taking place Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Barnum Hall Theatre on the campus of Santa Monica High School. The recently reunited duo of DJ Pete Rock and CL Smooth will make a special appearance during the showcase portion of the event, with Onyx, X-Clan and up-and-coming artists also scheduled to appear.
Before the showcase, which will begin at 4 p.m., a student-led theatrical production and a discussion panel will take place. The panel will bring together Chang Weisberg of Rock the Bells/Guerilla Union; Quincy “QD3” Jones III, music and film producer; Jody Armour, professor of law at the University Southern California; Jeff Weiss, a music critic for Los Angeles Times and the LA Weekly; Terrace Martin, multi-platinum producer; and James Leach, vice president at SESAC’s L.A. office. Tupac’s mentor and first manager Leila Steinberg will moderate the panel.
The Summit was conceived and organized by a committee within the Santa Monica-based nonprofit Pico Youth and Family Center in association with Steinberg’s Alternative Intervention Models (AIM), KRS-One’s Temple of Hip-Hop and Guerilla Union. More than 1,200 youth, young adults and teachers from throughout Los Angeles are expected to attend, with 200 to 250 youth and youth-serving leaders
attending the panel portion of the event. The venue is an indoor concert hall and outdoor vendor
and art village. The theme behind One Nation this year, “Building Bridges: Locally and Globally”
was devised to resonate with the youth. Through interaction with notable hip-hop figures, the
organizers hope to encourage organic community leadership, collaboration and entrepreneurship
among the attendees.
